Modern Language Program
HPU’s Modern Language program, housed in the department of Arts, Humanities, Communication and Languages, is dedicated to fostering global communication and cultural understanding by offering language instruction in Chinese, French, Hawaiian, Japanese, Korean, and Spanish. The study of a second language is a part of all BA degrees in the College of Liberal Arts, and we offer courses through the intermediate level in most of these languages, as well as upper-division courses and minors in Japanese and Spanish. We strongly encourage students to consider study abroad in a country where their target language is spoken. We aim to equip students from across the university with practical language skills and cultural insights that enhance their personal, academic, and professional lives, promoting a more interconnected and inclusive world.
Some of the benefits of language learning include
- Enhanced Communication: Learning a new language allows you to communicate with people from different cultures, fostering better understanding and collaboration.
- Cultural Appreciation: It opens up a deeper appreciation for the traditions, values, and perspectives of other cultures, promoting empathy and global awareness.
- Career Opportunities: Multilingual individuals often have a competitive edge in the job market, as many employers value the ability to communicate with international clients and partners.
- Cognitive Benefits: Language learning improves cognitive abilities, including problem-solving skills, memory, and multitasking.
- Travel Experiences: Knowing the local language can enrich travel experiences, making it easier to navigate, connect with locals, and fully immerse in the culture.
- Personal Growth: It challenges you to step out of your comfort zone, enhancing personal growth and adaptability.
Students interested in the study of language and culture should also consider adding a TEFL certificate to their bachelor’s degree. The TEFL certificate prepares students to teach English as a foreign language while living abroad.
In addition to the two semester beginning language sequence and the two-semester intermediate language sequence, HPU offers various literature and culture courses in Spanish and is developing courses in Spanish for special purposes such as medical Spanish and Spanish for Business.
